The Municipality of Leros has set in motion significant work at the Bourtzi archaeological site in Agia Marina, aiming to protect and promote a historic location of particular importance to the island.

Work had already begun at the site, as shown in the accompanying video.

Leros mayor Timotheos Kottakis visited the area with deputy mayor Fragkos Dipieros and municipal councillors Georgios Koutouzos and Manolis Koumbaros to monitor progress.

Mr Kottakis said an older study for improvements and redevelopment, prepared in 2010 during his previous term as mayor, would be updated at no cost.

The update would allow the project to proceed in cooperation with the Dodecanese Ephorate of Antiquities.

The final goal is to restore, and where feasible reconstruct, the ancient fortification at Bourtzi so that the site can regain the appearance and significance it deserves.

The mayor and his colleagues spoke to the Leros News camera and journalist Nikos Ignatidis about the work.
