A four-day programme of live-fire military exercises is due to take place off the Greek island of Leros next week, with authorities warning fishermen, sailors and residents to stay clear of designated danger zones.
The exercises will run from Monday 9 November to Thursday 12 November 2026, according to an official notice issued by the Leros Port Authority.
Military activity will be concentrated around Agia Kioura and the nearby uninhabited islets of Strongyli and Trypiti, in the northern part of Leros, in the Dodecanese archipelago.
The operations will involve fast patrol boats, heavy weapons, anti-aircraft systems, artillery, mortars and tank-mounted weapons.
When will the exercises take place?
The Leros Port Authority has confirmed the following timetable:
- Monday 9 November: 7am to 3pm
- Tuesday 10 November: 7am to 3pm and 5pm to 11pm
- Wednesday 11 November: 7am to 3pm
- Thursday 12 November: 7am to 3pm
Two alternative dates, Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 November, have also been set aside, with exercises scheduled between 8am and 2.30pm if required.
Tuesday's programme includes evening firing exercises, extending military activity into the night.
Restricted maritime areas and geographical coordinates
Authorities have identified a danger zone covering parts of northern Leros and its surrounding waters.
The restricted area is bounded by:
- To the west: Agios Ioannis, near Partheni, including naval installations.
- To the east: The islets of Strongyli and Trypiti, extending five nautical miles out to sea.
- To the south: Vayias Hill.
- To the north: An imaginary line connecting the islets of Archangelos and Kalopodi.
The official notice provides four geographical reference points:
| Point | Latitude (N) | Longitude (E) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 37° 13′ 55″ | 026° 49′ 05″ |
| 2 | 37° 12′ 18″ | 026° 50′ 28″ |
| 3 | 37° 11′ 15″ | 026° 47′ 14″ |
| 4 | 37° 11′ 56″ | 026° 46′ 46″ |
These coordinates are reproduced from the Port Authority's official announcement and should be consulted alongside the full navigational warning.
Strict safety restrictions during live firing
The Leros Port Authority has warned that people, animals, vessels and vehicles must not enter or remain within the designated danger areas during the scheduled firing periods.
The restrictions are intended to prevent accidents and protect those operating in or travelling through the affected waters.
Particular attention has been drawn to fishing vessels, recreational boats and other maritime traffic operating around northern Leros.
Local fishing associations, marinas, shipping agents and other relevant organisations have been asked to ensure that vessel operators are informed and take the necessary precautions.
The announcement was issued on 5 November 2026 and signed by Lieutenant Commander Ioannis Efstratiou, head of the Leros Port Authority.
