Leros Mayor Challenges Power Operator Over Repeated Outages

Mayor Timotheos Kottakis wrote to the electricity network operator over repeated outages and voltage drops affecting water, sewerage and peak-season activity.

Electricity infrastructure on Leros affected by repeated power cuts and voltage drops

Leros mayor Timotheos Kottakis strongly criticised repeated power cuts and voltage drops that had caused problems across the island.

The issue was particularly serious because Leros was at the height of the tourist season, when demand from businesses, households and essential infrastructure was high.

The mayor said the repeated outages and voltage reductions had already created severe difficulties for the water and sewerage systems. News of further planned cuts from 13 August caused additional concern.

In a letter dated 10 August 2026 to HEDNO, the electricity distribution network operator, Mr Kottakis said the situation was creating problems that were impossible to manage at that time of year.

He said he intended to ask the municipal economic committee on 11 August to instruct the municipality's legal adviser to examine and pursue the action available under the law against the Public Power Corporation and HEDNO.

The mayor warned that the situation could expose the municipality to criminal and civil liability for problems for which, he said, it was not responsible.

Mayor's letter to HEDNO

The letter, municipal reference 6084, was issued by the mayor's office in Platanos on 10 August 2026.

Mr Kottakis told HEDNO that he had been informed that morning of electricity interruptions planned in parts of Leros from 13 August. He said they would create problems that were impossible to manage during the peak tourist period.

Frequent outages and voltage drops had, among other things, caused enormous problems in the operation of water supply and sewerage services, he wrote.

He said his first proposal to the economic committee meeting on 11 August would be to authorise the municipal legal adviser to take the action provided by law against the Public Power Corporation and HEDNO.

The power supply problems were creating potential criminal and civil liabilities for the municipality even though it was not responsible for them, the mayor concluded.
