Leros – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to visit the island this Saturday, 28 June, where he will inspect major infrastructure projects underway by the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Leros. He will be accompanied by South Aegean Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos and the Dodecanese MPs. There are strong indications that Mr. Mitsotakis may also travel to Patmos later that afternoon, though the schedule has not yet been finalised.
Key Requests from the Local Mayor
Leros Mayor Timotheos Kottakis is expected to raise critical issues with the Prime Minister, including:
- Boosting the local hospital’s medical and nursing staff
- Immediate urban planning changes for the entrance/exit of Leros’ Closed Controlled Facility
- Addressing water shortages and outdated water supply networks
- Repairing dangerous road infrastructure
- Establishing a permanent fire station
- Securing funding approval for various ministry-backed projects
Minister of Shipping to Inspect Port Works
Ahead of the PM’s visit, Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vasilis Kikilias will arrive on Friday, 27 June, to oversee the restoration works on the Lakki Port quay subsidence.
The €988,288.77 (incl. VAT) project, signed by Governor Hatzimarkos and Mayor Kottakis, aims to repair underwater erosion that has posed risks to pedestrians, vehicles, and approaching vessels.
Funding Breakdown
- €800,000 from the Shipping Ministry’s Recovery and Resilience Fund (Regional Port Upgrades Initiative)
- €195,000 from the South Aegean Region’s own funds
The South Aegean Region, in collaboration with the Municipality of Leros, will oversee the project’s implementation under a programmatic agreement.
