A 6.1 magnitude earthquake, according to the automatic solution of the Geodynamic Institute, struck at 06:19 this morning, Thursday, in the marine area north of Crete.

Preliminary data indicate the epicentre was located 55 km north of Neapoli, Lasithi, Crete.

The initial estimate places the focal depth at 37 km.

The earthquake was also felt in several areas of Attica, while journalists from Crete reported a long-lasting tremor that caused concern as it occurred very early in the morning.

According to protothema.gr and Efthymios Lekkas, President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation (OASP), “the earthquake had significant depth, which is important as it likely reduces the chance of a tsunami.”

Mr Lekkas added that the quake occurred in a trench, not on the Hellenic arc, and estimated that significant damage to Crete is unlikely.

According to Google’s automatic detection (Android), the earthquake registered as magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale.
