This morning, a shocking incident occurred at Leros Town Hall when a section of the second-floor balcony gave way and collapsed, endangering everyone inside the building, a daily hub for citizens, employees, and local officials.
Eyewitnesses described a scene that could have ended in tragedy, yet miraculously, no injuries were reported. The sudden collapse sparked panic, prompting swift action from those present, who immediately evacuated the area and alerted the authorities.
Allegations & Reactions
The Town Hall building is in constant use, yet according to municipal sources, no recorded maintenance has been carried out on its load-bearing structure in the last decade.
The Municipality of Leros and Town Hall staff have mobilised swiftly, pledging a full structural inspection by experts and accelerated reinforcement works to ensure the building’s safety.
What Comes Next?
In the coming days, a technical committee is expected to assess the building’s condition and outline urgent measures.
Meanwhile, authorities will inspect all municipal buildings, including the General State Archives, which also features a visibly deteriorated balcony, to prevent further risks to public safety.
