In the early hours of yesterday morning, the Port Authority of Leros was notified that a private recreational vessel (P/V), carrying one Greek national, began taking on water while navigating in the maritime area off Partheni, Leros. In an effort to prevent the vessel from sinking, the sole occupant deliberately ran it aground on the sandy shore of Agia Kioura.
The individual safely disembarked unaided and was reported to be in good health. In response, officials from the Leros Port Authority were immediately dispatched to the site, accompanied by a fishing vessel, an aquaculture support boat, and a diving vessel to provide assistance.
The private vessel was subsequently salvaged and brought ashore. No injuries were reported, and there was no evidence of marine pollution as a result of the incident.
The Port Authority of Leros, which is conducting a preliminary investigation, has prohibited the vessel from setting sail until a seaworthiness certificate is submitted.
