Yesterday afternoon, the Leros Port Authority was notified that a German-flagged sailing vessel had spotted two bodies in waters approximately 1 nautical mile south of Piganousa.
A Frontex patrol vessel and a Greek Coast Guard boat—carrying a private diver—rushed to the scene. The Frontex vessel located and retrieved an unconscious woman, whose identity remains unknown, and transported her to Leros’ port.
An EKAB ambulance received the woman and transferred her to Leros General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Searches for the second body were conducted by the Frontex vessel and the Coast Guard but proved unsuccessful. Operations continue as part of routine patrols.
The deceased woman will be transferred to the Dodecanese Forensic Medical Service for an autopsy.
The Leros Port Authority is conducting a preliminary investigation.
