PRESS RELEASE – Unfortunately, once again we are witnessing an unacceptable situation that insults our community and degrades our island: a new illegal dump site has emerged at the Poseidonio area in Lakki, one of the most central and historically significant locations in Leros.
This situation evokes both anger and sadness. It is neither isolated nor accidental. In July 2023, just months before the elections, the current municipal administration publicly denounced this very image of neglect and pledged that “everything would change.”
Regrettably, not only has nothing changed, but the situation has deteriorated further. The administration’s irresponsibility and incompetence have now become a serious threat to public health and the environment.
We call on the Municipal Authority to:
- Stop making excuses and telling lies.
- Take responsibility and immediately remove the waste from Poseidonio.
- Finally implement a comprehensive cleaning and waste management plan, as it had previously promised.
Leros cannot endure further degradation. Protecting the environment is a collective duty, but the primary responsibility lies with those entrusted to manage the island’s daily affairs.
