Leros mayor Timotheos Kottakis was due in Athens on Wednesday 24 June to sign the funding agreement for a major island water supply project.
The signing was scheduled for 5pm at the environment and energy ministry in the presence of minister Stavros Papastavrou.
The new allocation of EUR 4.63 million was to be added to EUR 1 million already approved for the Municipality of Leros, bringing total project funding to EUR 5.63 million.
The project provides for two new desalination units, each with a daily capacity of 2,000 cubic metres, as well as 17.4km of new main water pipelines.
The new infrastructure is intended to reinforce the water network and allow desalinated drinking water to be supplied across Leros at a time when water scarcity presents a critical challenge for the island.
Signing the funding agreement marked a major step for island infrastructure and would allow the tender and construction procedures to follow.
