Why Leros Is Gaining International Attention as an Authentic Greek Island

Traditional windmill and island landscape on Leros

Leros has been in a period of increased extroversion in recent years. Greek and foreign visitors with recognition choose the island for their holidays, international travel magazines highlight its beauties, important personalities of the business and cultural life develop ties with it, while the governmental interest is accompanied by ministerial visits and funding of infrastructure projects.

Those who have known Leros for decades know that its natural beauty, history, architecture and hospitality are not recent discoveries. What has changed noticeably, especially in the last two years, is its visibility and the interest shown by people who until a few years ago might not have included it in their first travel choices.

The island is not trying to copy Mykonos, Santorini or other popular destinations. On the contrary, what makes it attractive is that it still offers something different: relaxed pace, authentic hospitality, excellent gastronomy, special landscapes and an environment unspoiled by mass tourism.

These very characteristics seem to be appreciated by more and more visitors, among them well-known persons from Greece and abroad, people from business, shipping, culture and public life.

Leros is gaining a place on the international tourist map

Indicative of the growing recognition of the island is its presence in important international travel publications.

The British Condé Nast Traveler included Leros in the 15 Greek island destinations it recommends for 2026, placing particular emphasis on authenticity, special architecture and peaceful rhythms of life.

It is even worth noting that the magazine also refers to the interest that Leros presents to international travelers who take vacations with pleasure boats.

This is not an insignificant reference. A travel medium of international scope recognizes in a relatively small island of the Dodecanese, characteristics that are sought by a public with different requirements from those of mass tourism.

This image is reinforced by visits of well-known personalities. In the summer of 2026, former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis was in Leros, who visited the War Museum in Merikia and was given a tour by Mayor Timotheos Kottakis.

Such visits, as well as the presence of people from the business and artistic fields, contribute to the recognition of the island, especially when visitors acquire a personal relationship with Leros and return to it.

The growing interest of Turkish visitors

A particularly interesting aspect of tourism development concerns the Turkish market and in particular themarine tourism.

The geographical position of Leros, opposite the Turkish coast and close to important maritime tourism centres, creates conditions for attracting visitors from the neighboring country.

Lakki, with its large natural bay and boat service facilities, is an important stop for those travelling by sailing and motor yachts. Leros also attracts Turkish visitors who choose to get to know the island through this way of vacation.

At the same time, the sea connections with the Turkish coasts and the interest of shipping companies in the region create new possibilities.

The importance of this market is not limited to arrivals. Boat visitors use berthing, catering, maintenance, catering and trade services, supporting different business sectors.

For Leros, which has an important maritime tradition, the further development of maritime tourism is a prospect that is directly linked to the port infrastructure and the ability to serve more vessels.

It is no coincidence that during his visit in July, Kyriakos Mitsotakis also mentioned the Turkish visitors who choose the Greek islands for their holidays.

The second visit of Mitsotakis and the special importance of the meeting at the City Hall

The visit of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Leros, on July 28, 2026, was one of the most important political moments of the year for the island.

It was his second visit in three years, after June 2023, and included visits to projects and infrastructure, as well as an official meeting with Mayor Timotheus Kottakis at City Hall.

The specific meeting was of particular importance for the Municipal Authority, as it gave the opportunity to present to the Prime Minister the interventions that have progressed, as well as the development needs of Leros.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis publicly acknowledged the island's progress, pointing out that Leros has now acquired a substantial presence on the tourist map and shows significant investment interest.

During his stay he visited the Leros Hospital, the port facilities in Lakki and the historical hotel "Leros", which was restored with funding from the Ministry of Culture.

For his part, Timotheus Kottakis referred to funding of 45 million euros for infrastructure projects that, as he stated, were secured by the government during the first two and a half years of the municipal mandate.

The Regional Governor Giorgos Chatzimarkos and the cooperation for infrastructure

An important interlocutor of the Municipal Authority is the Regional Governor of South Aegean Giorgos Chatzimarkos, with whom Timotheus Kottakis maintains regular cooperation for the promotion of projects.

A typical case is the restoration of the port facilities in Lakki. The Regional Governor had publicly referred to the immediate mobilization of the Mayor, when the seriousness of the problems at the central pier was established.

Corresponding meetings have been held in Rhodes for the maturation of studies and the tendering of new projects.

The relationship with the president of the Onassis Foundation and the large donation for the schools

Of particular interest is the relationship developed byMayor Timotheus Kottakisand the President of the Municipal Council Panagiotis Koumbaros with the President of the Onassis Foundation, Antonis Papadimitriou, and his wife, Aphrodite Panagiotakou.

This relationship has now acquired a substantial social content.

In August 2026 it became known that the Papadimitriou couple is personally financing renovation works at the Belleneio Gymnasium and the Boulafenteio General Lyceum of Leros.

In fact, Antonis Papadimitriou and Aphrodite Panagiotakou visited the two schools together with the Mayor and the President of the Municipal Council, in order to be informed about the progress of the works.

During the visit, the President of the Onassis Foundation spoke with particularly positive words about his collaboration with the two representatives of the Municipal Authority, recognising their effort to promote development and infrastructure without altering the special identity of Leros.

The initiative becomes even more important because it is not limited to simple financial support. Aphrodite Panagiotakou has also expressed the intention to enrich school spaces with works of art and to develop collaborations with people of culture.

Aristides Alafouzos: From the love for Leros to the support of the Hospital

Of similar interest is the communication between Timotheus Kottakis and the shipowner Aristidis Alafouzos and his wife, Maria.

On October 18, 2026, the Mayor publicly referred to the couple's offer to Leros and presented the history of an important initiative for the Hospital.

As he explained, during their personal communication, Aristides Alafouzos asked him about the needs of the island. The Mayor raised the serious problem of the lack of a permanent cardiologist and proposed the financial support of the position as an additional incentive to attract a doctor.

A donation contract was signed between the 2nd Health District, Leros Hospital and the companyKyklades Maritime Corporation, which provides for an additional monthly financial support of 1,500 euros for a cardiologist who will serve at the hospital, initially for two years, with the possibility of extension.

This offer does not replace the state's obligation to adequately staff the public hospital. It does show, however, how a contact with people who are able and willing to give can lead to a concrete initiative to tackle a serious problem.

Ministerial visits and funding

At the same time, the presence of government officials in Leros has become particularly frequent.

In the visits of the Minister of HealthAdonis Georgiadis, of the Minister of CultureLinas Mendoniand the Deputy Minister of ShippingStefanou Ghikathe presence of the Ministers of Environment and Energy was recently addedStavros Papastavrouand Immigration and AsylumThanos Pleuris.

These contacts are linked to the financing and promotion of projects, particularly in the areas of water supply, waste management, health and basic infrastructure.

According to the data presented by the Mayor, the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum has allocated, since January 2024, approximately 18.4 million euros for 14 projects and actions, while the Ministry of Environment and Energy is associated with funding of 9.6 million euros for two important interventions.

Of particular importance are the planned desalination and water supply infrastructure, as well as the interventions for solid waste and sewage management.

Kottaki's constant contacts and the development bet

One of the key features of today's Municipal Authority is the emphasis on meetings with government officials, service agents, representatives of the Region and people of private initiative.

Timotheus Kottakis makes frequent trips to Athens and Rhodes, seeking to promote issues of the island directly to the relevant ministries and agencies that manage the funding.

At the same time, the relationships it maintains with people from the business and shipping community have gained more importance, as some of them have already been linked to donations and social contribution initiatives.

The examples of Antonis Papadimitriou and Aristides Alafouzou are typical. Combined with government contacts, they show that the Municipal Authority seeks to utilize different possibilities of cooperation for the needs of the place.

The Mayor has chosen to personally undertake a large part of these contacts, while the President of the Municipal Council, Municipal officials, technical services, representatives of the Region and other institutional actors participate in the effort.

Of course, the value of a self-governing effort is ultimately judged by the results. Visits, meetings and funding decisions matter when they lead to projects being completed and services being improved.

Leros still faces serious challenges, from Hospital staffing and water infrastructure to ferry service and managing growing tourism.

For Timotheos Kottakis and his associates, the big issue is to make use of the financing and partnerships that have been developed, so that the benefits become permanent.

Leros has an opportunity that should not be missed

The increased tourist visibility, the presence of well-known visitors, the interest of the business world and the initiatives of social contribution form an interesting perspective for the coming years.

For the first time after a long time, different developments seem to be converging in the same direction: Leros is gaining more recognition and more possibilities to claim resources, investments and partnerships.

The Municipal Authority is trying to take advantage of this opportunity, with Timothios Kottakis placing particular emphasis on personal communication and the development of trusting relationships with people who can contribute to the progress of the island.

Maintaining these relationships is important, but even more important is leveraging them in a way that will leave a tangible impact on society.

Leros does not need to lose its authenticity to develop. On the contrary, the preservation of its character, combined with modern infrastructure, better public services and careful tourism development, can be its most important advantage.

The foundations for such a perspective are created through the work of many people, the cooperation of institutions, private initiatives and the efforts of the residents themselves.

The next period will show how effectively these possibilities will be utilized. Because the essential development of Leros will not be reflected only in how many well-known people visit it or how many ministers arrive on the island, but in how much better the daily life of those who live and work on it will become all year round.
