Scheduled Water Cuts Begin on Leros as Summer Shortage Reaches 1,300 Cubic Metres a Day

ANNOUNCEMENT – Our island is in a STATE OF EMERGENCY DUE TO LEIPSIDRIA (Government Gazette 6416/01-12-2025) from December 2025 by decision of the Minister of Energy and Environment, after a positive opinion from the ERA.

From the first day of our Municipal Authority, 01/01/2024, we received dismantled the two desalination plants that had the ability to produce 2,000m3 per day and which we reconstructed at the beginning of 2025 at a cost of €700,000.00.

At the same time, from the first months of 2024 we started the necessary actions to provide a comprehensive solution for all the benefits of our island for the next decades.

With enormous efforts, knowledge and responsibility, we managed to be financed by the Ministry of the Environment with 5.28 million euros, having previously completed all the studies, tender documents and permits of the State Services that were necessary.

The project concerns 17.4 kilometres of central water supply pipelines and two new desalination plants with a capacity of 1,000m3 per day each SO THAT ALL OUR ISLAND SUPPLIES HAVE DRINKING - DESALAINED WATER FOR THE NEXT DECADES!!!

The project will soon be auctioned!!!

At the same time, we took corresponding actions to replace the aged (over 60 years old) asbestos water supply pipes (carcinogenic for the technicians who intervene in the damage) 20,000 metres long, from which to date we have leaks of more than 40% of the produced water.

In the summer months the water demand is 4,500m3 per day and the water production is 3,200m3 per day. There is therefore a water deficit of 1,300m3 per day in the network and for this reason we are forced from tomorrow to implement the planned necessary water supply interruptions in specific areas, on days and times indicated in the table above.
