Rescued Monk Seal Calypso Returns to the Aegean Sea

MOm / Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Seal announced a particularly moving and optimistic news about marine life in the Aegean, announcing that the little seal "Calypso", after a difficult battle for her life, has now returned healthy and strong to her natural environment.

As it became known, the little seal, which had been in a particularly problematic state of health, recovered impressively thanks to the dedication of the care team, the veterinarians who took care of it, but also to its own strength.

The release of "Calypsos" took place in the protected area of Gyaros, in the presence of guards of the South Aegean Management Unit of OFYPEKA, in a symbolic moment, as it coincided with the announcement by the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the issuance of the Presidential Decree concerning the comprehensive protection of the area.

This development is characterized as particularly positive, since, as pointed out, it comes after delays and setbacks, now effectively strengthening the protection framework of an area of special environmental importance.

Special mention is also made of the contribution of the residents of Lipsi, who participated in the rescue of the little seal, while special thanks are also given to the veterinarian Michalis Kontrafouris from the Veterinary Centre of Leros, for providing first aid to the animal.

At the same time, MOm thanked Blue Star Ferries for the safe transport of the seal during the rescue operation, as well as the Attica Zoological Park for the hospitality and technical support of the care facilities.

As highlighted, MOm's rescue and care actions for 2026 are supported by Monk Seal Alliance funding.

The story of little "Calypsos" is another bright example of what can be achieved when scientific bodies, local communities and people with knowledge and sensitivity work together to protect wildlife in the Aegean.
