About the course of the tourist season, the infrastructure projects and the strong ties of the island with Rhodes, he spoke on the radio station Real Voice 99.5 and on the show "First Morning" with Manolis Papazoglou, the well-known businessman of Leros,Fotis Giannakos.
Mr. Giannakos, who is actively active in the catering and rooms for rent sector on the island, proceeded with an analytical evaluation of the image of the tourist market so far, conveying the climate that prevails in the local economy.
From the sluggish start to the peak of the season
As Mr. Giannakos noted, although June started somewhat sluggishly, at the moment the island is at the "peak" of the tourist season, with traffic registering a significant increase
Referring to the characteristics of the visitors, he underlined that two different categories of tourists are observed:
Visitors who boost the local market by consuming in local restaurants and shops.
Guests choosing short-term rentals (Airbnb) with kitchens, who prefer to cook in their accommodation, limiting outside expenses.
Despite these differences, Mr. Giannakos emphasized that the overall picture is positive and the season in Leros is developing at a satisfactory pace.
Infrastructure projects, marinas and the aid from Turkey
Special mention was made of the ongoing infrastructure projects, mainly at the island's port, which are expected to give further impetus to tourism in the years to come.
At the same time, the following emerged as decisive factors for the economic stimulation of Leros:
- The crowded marinas: Marine tourism and pleasure boats bring significant income to the island.
- Visitors from Turkey: The daily connection by catamaran brings in crowds of tourists from the opposite shores, effectively boosting the local market.
The Leria "family" and the support of Rhodes
Mr. Giannakos closed his conversation with a warm reference to the island's ties with Rhodes, highlighting the constant support it provides to Leros.
"Wherever the Lerians are, they are all like a family", he said characteristically, making a special mention of the Lerians Association of Rhodes but also of his compatriots who live and work in Rhodes, who selflessly offer their help to their island in every way.
