According to initial reports, a request is expected to be submitted by the Mayor of Leros, Timotheos Kottakis, to declare Leros in a State of Civil Protection Emergency, due to the serious problems that have been recorded in the port infrastructure of the island.
These problems have been recorded both in the port of Agia Marina, as well as in other areas of the island. This move, once accepted by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, makes it possible to speed up critical interventions and to "run" procedures that under normal circumstances require more time, with the aim of immediate damage restoration and strengthening of operational readiness.
What does the island practically gain if the request is approved:
- Faster mobilization of mechanisms and means for response and recovery,
- Funding
- Facilitation of urgent works and supplies for critical infrastructure,
- Stronger coordination framework with relevant authorities,
- Ability to activate support procedures for urgent needs,
- Specific time validity of the decision (up to 3 months, with the possibility of extension where documented).
It is noted that the island of Leros has already been declared in a state of emergency due to water shortage.
