Leros and Agathonisi Hold Marine Pollution Response Training

In the context of the care of the Primary SchoolPort Fund of Lerosfor the protection of the marine environment, as well as in application of the current legislation, training is being organised for the year 2026 for the two voluntary Anti-Pollution Teams of Leros Municipal Port Fund.

The training will take place:

• Monday 04/05/2026in LakkiLeros, in collaboration with Marina Leros Evros Nautiki S.A. (Leros Marina Evros S.A.), and
• Thursday 07/05/2026 and Friday 08/05/2026in Agathonisi.

The programme includes a theoretical and practical part and aims to train the participants in the prevention and treatment of marine pollution incidents.

The training will be conducted in collaboration with the specialized marine environment protection company"METOPI - Environmental Protection Consultants".

Every interested citizen is also given the opportunity to participate, in order to be informed about the possibilities of Leros Municipal Port Fund, both in Leros and Agathonisi, regarding the anti-pollution equipment available, as well as the appropriate methods of response in the event of a marine pollution incident.

Detailed training programme

Leros – 04/05/2026

Theoretical part of education

Monday 04/05/2026Time: 08:30 am to 11:00 a.m.

The theoretical part of the training will take place onCinema of Lakki.

Thematics of theoretical education

• General elements of organisation in dealing with marine pollution incidents.
• Sources of pollution within or near the port facilities of the D.L.T. Leros – Agathonissou.
• Properties of oil when it comes into contact with the sea.
• Presentation of the existing anti-pollution equipment of the D.LT.T. Leros - Agathonisi in Leros and Agathonisi, of Marina Leros - EVROS SA, but also of the other responsible entities on the island of Leros, with photographic material.
• Procedures for using floating dams, with an emphasis on their anchoring. Analysis of consequences in the event that the application of the specific procedure is not chosen.
• Procedures for the use of absorbent and adhesive materials and selection of the appropriate material depending on the incident.
• Important moments from the previous Anti-Pollution Exercise of Leros Municipal Port Fund.
• Presentation of audio-visual material with an exercise to counter aggressive energy with a drone at a fuel installation in South Crete.
• Dialogue / discussion.

Practical part of training

Monday 04/05/2026Time: 11:30 am to 2:30 p.m.

The practical part of the Leros Anti-Pollution Team training will take place onPort of Lakki, in collaboration with the Leros Marina Anti-Pollution Team, and will consist of two parts:

1st leg

Demonstration of the materials and means of dealing with marine pollution that D.L.I.T.A. has. Leros in Leros and Marina Leros / EVROS SA, as well as a detailed presentation of how to use each material and medium separately, depending on the nature of the polluting substance.

2nd leg

Conducting an exercise to deal with a marine pollution incident with a floating dam, based on a scenario involving a spill of oily waste from a vessel, which will be docked in the port in question.

Agathonisi – 07 & 08/05/2026

Theoretical part of education

Thursday 07/05/2026Time: 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

The theoretical part of the Agathonissi Anti-Pollution Team training will take place in the renovated Cultural Events Hall of the Agathonissi Municipality.

• Sources of pollution within or near the port facilities of Leros Municipal Port Fund.
• Properties of oil when it comes into contact with the sea.
• Presentation of the existing anti-pollution equipment of Leros Municipal Port Fund, both in Leros and Agathonisi, with corresponding photographic material.
• Procedures for using floating dams, with an emphasis on their anchoring. Analysis of consequences in the event that the application of the specific procedure is not chosen.
• Procedures for the use of absorbent and adhesive materials and selection of the appropriate material depending on the incident.
• Presentation of audio-visual material with an exercise to counter aggressive energy with a drone at a fuel installation in South Crete.
• Dialogue / discussion.

The practical part of the training of the Anti-Pollution Team of Agathonisi will be held inPort of Agathonisiand will consist of two parts:

1st leg

2nd leg

Conducting an exercise to deal with a marine pollution incident with the installation of a floating barrier, based on a scenario of an oil waste spill from a vessel, which is docked at the Port of Agathonisi.
