Cambridge Research Places Leros Heritage in an International Study

Historic buildings of the former psychiatric hospital on Leros
  • The historic buildings of Leros on the cover of an important new international volume on the ethics of cultural heritage.
  • His four-year research projectDr. Andreas Pantazatouif. Cambridge University professor on Leros, produces the first study on an ethical approach to tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

The photo from the old psychiatric hospital of Leros, taken byDr. A. Fantastic, now graces its coverTheRoutledgeHandbookofHeritageEthics, an important international volume published in April 2026. This image was chosen by the book's editors to represent the moral relationship that people build with what they inherit from the past.

One of the chapters of the book is written by Dr. Andrea Pantazato, Associate Professor of Heritage Studies at Cambridge's Department of Archaeology, is the first product of his long-term research on Leros and the first study to examine the history of the asylum from a cultural heritage perspective. It proposes an ethical framework—grounded in a theory of care—for understanding both the material remains and the human stories associated with the mental hospital. The research was developed with the ongoing support of the Leros Hospital and the Dodecanese Mental Health Sector Social Cooperative, and was based on the oral histories of island workers and residents who shared their memories of the psychiatric hospital's legacy.

Dr. Pantazatos stated: "Over the past four years, through my research programme "Living with a Difficult Past" at the University of Cambridge and having the undivided support of the KOISPE team, I had the opportunity to work with former employees of the psychiatric hospital and residents of Leros. My research paper is the first of its kind and addresses the ethical dilemmas arising from our relationship with tangible and intangible cultural heritage, combining analytical rigor with well-documented case studies, going beyond simple descriptive accounts of places. The selection of photography in his collective volumeTheRoutledgeHandbookofHeritageEthics(from the emblematic 11th Pavilion of the old Psychiatry) is important and highlights the uniqueness of the cultural heritage of the island of Leros. I feel privileged to have been in Leros and its people have embraced me and supported me in my research work, encouraging me to continue. I thank them from the bottom of my heart!"
